Carbon yXe
The Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce, together with Tourism Saskatoon, is working to Change the Conversation Around Carbon.
Keynote Speaker: Murad Al-Katib, President & CEO of AGT Food and Ingredients
Murad Al-Katib, is the President and CEO and a Board member of AGT Food and Ingredients Inc. Murad completed his Masters from Thunderbird School of Global Management in Arizona and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Saskatchewan, before working in international trade promotion for the Government of Saskatchewan. In 2001, he founded Saskcan Pulse Trading, providing the nucleus for AGT and growing the company to a world leader in value-added pulses, staple foods and ingredients with revenues exceeding $1.7 billion in 2015, customers in over 120 countries and with over 40 manufacturing facilities on 5 continents.
This year, Murad Al Katib became the first Canadian to ever receive the Oslo Business for Peace Award, an international prize selected by a group of Nobel Laureates. Murad has been the recipient of a number of prestigious awards including the 2016 Ernst and Young “Canadian Entrepreneur of the Year” Award after winning the Prairie Region and adding to a 2004 EY’s “Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year” Award. Murad has also received the 2016 United Nations Association of Canada “Global Citizen Laureate” Award and Canada's “Top 40 under 40” by the Globe and Mail in 2005. In 2012, Murad was included in PROFITGuide Magazine’s list of Canada’s “30 Most Fabulous Entrepreneurs of the Past 30 Years” as well as the Western Producer, Canada’s leading agriculture newspaper, list of “44 Innovators Who Shaped Prairie Agriculture”. Murad has received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, complementing his award of a Queen’s Saskatchewan Centennial Medal given in 2006. Murad has also led AGT to many company awards including two Saskatchewan “Business of the Year ABEX” Awards and a 2014 Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership “Exporter of the Year” Award.

Teams attending include:
C2CNF - Washington, USA
A new fundamental solar process has been introduced. This STEP process efficiently removes carbon from the atmosphere and generates the staples needed by society, ranging from fuels, to metals, bleach and construction materials, at high solar efficiency and without carbon dioxide generation. By using the full spectrum of sunlight, STEP captures more solar energy than the most efficient solar cell or photoelectrochemical processes. Sunlight converts CO2 to carbon nanofibers and drives new CO2-free syntheses for iron, cement and fertilizer.
Carbon Capture Machine - University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom
Offers a versatile, scalable mineralization technology that profitably converts CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion into valuable products. Modular Carbon Capture Machines (CCMs) will be developed, tested and demonstrated to efficiently combine CO2 from stack emissions, an alkali base and formation or produced water (or other) brines containing Ca and Mg (the inputs), to produce valuable solid carbonate feedstocks, and products from those feedstocks (the outputs). The technology can be deployed worldwide.
Carbon Upcycling Technology - Calgary
Carbon Upcycling Technologies (CUT) is a Calgary based start-up that was launched in June 2013 as a response to CCEMC’s Grand Challenge. CUT was formed to sequester CO2 emissions in a stable, solid form that could be sold to the market at a profit. The company uses an IP-protected process to create graphene nano-platelets, using waste CO2 and a cheap carbon feedstock. The product can be used to reinforce construction materials, increase electrical conductivity of plastics, produce water purification membranes, and manufacture high-performance electronics.
Carbon Upcycling UCLA - California, USA
UCLA’s breakthrough technology first captures CO2 from power plant smokestacks. Then, the captured CO2 is “trapped” to produce a new type of CO2-neutral building material that can be used like cement. By removing CO2 from power plant smokestacks this technology reduces the largest single source of greenhouse gas emissions. By creating a CO2-neutral building material it also displaces cement, which is one of the largest industrial sources of emissions, responsible for approximately 5% of global CO2. Once commercialized, this technology offers a much lower-CO2 emissions trajectory for the construction and power sectors across the globe while promoting environmentally sustainable growth. In brief, the process utilizes CO2 to make a construction material similar to concrete. One of the strengths of our method is adaptability to a wide range of flue gas compositions, which lets us use CO2 from many different emitters.
Ingenuity Lab - University of Alberta, Canada
The technology mimics the biochemical reactions of photosynthesis in non-living materials to generate the energy to transform the carbon dioxide into valuable products. It takes the CO2 from flue gas and builds the carbons up into long chains, with the result being that 47 different specialty chemicals can be produced."
Innovator Energy - Yale, USA
Innovator Energy (IE) developed, patented and is commercializing game changing CO2 capture and conversion technologies. IE’s CO2 capture technology uses 90% less energy than existing technologies, is composed of low-cost, non-toxic reagents and occurs entirely at room temperature conditions (RTP). Flue gas CO2 is captured at 80% lower operating cost than existing processes and at $8 per ton, significantly below pure CO2 market prices. IE’s CO2 conversion technology converts waste into value by transforming two waste products, H2S and flue gas CO2, into CO (an essential compound for the production of methanol, polycarbonates, polyurethanes, and acetic acid) below market prices.
Tandem Technical - Ottawa, Canada
Tandem Technical’s patent pending technology collects harmful effluent gases from facilities such as power plants or cement factories, and utilizes the toxic gas to produce non-toxic, high-demand, marketable minerals. This scrubber can be installed post-construction or during initial construction to virtually any facility that produces harmful greenhouse gases. The effluent gas is channeled through the system where it undergoes an absorption process that removes harmful greenhouse gases and converts them to non-toxic, usable materials used in the construction, agriculture, pulp and paper, adhesives and health supplement industries.
